Guest Speaker - Spencer McCullough
Spencer is a 29-year-old endurance athlete who lives in Denver, CO. On May 21st, 2024, in Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine, Spencer became the first person to complete a trip to all the national parks in the lower forty-eight states…by bicycle. It took 13 months, 18,000 miles, 28 flat tires and he managed to document it all on his Instagram page.
See - https://www.instagram.com/spencexyz/
And just for fun, Spencer’s post about his trip on Reddit is the most upvoted (“liked”) post of all time in the National Parks subreddit.
In preparation for this bicycle trip, Spencer moved into a van, cutting the expenses of his life down
to save money so he could take this time off. This bike trip was only the beginning of a larger advocacy project. Spencer’s goal is to make sure that if you hike or bike into a federally managed campground, there will always be a cheap place for you to stay. This will provide the necessary support for people who are recreating without a car and offer an incentive to others to leave their car at home.
When not on the move, Spencer is heavily involved in community organizing and advocacy work.
Read more about Spencer in the February issue of "AS I SEE IT". This issue (and all prior issues) can be found in the "As I See It" tab on the left.

For cyclists who take training seriously, the THaT ride series is a great opportunity to build speed, sharpen group-riding skills, and push your limits in a competitive but supportive environment. If you’re looking to improve, this is a great ride to join.
We offer two ride options:
• A+ Pace: Nearly race pace, averaging 21.0 - 22.9+ mph (Will get into Ax pace at times depending on riders, route and weather) . If you’re looking to ride fast, this is your ride.
• A Pace: Leaves five minutes after A+, following the same route at a controlled 19–20.9 MPH. Ideal for those training to step up or preferring a more collaborative effort.
Details:
• Starts at Marina Parking Lot, Mercer County Park
• 30–35 miles, rotating route but always eastward
• This is a drop ride, but the A group will sweep dropped riders when possible
Ride Etiquette:
• Pace lines in effect—smooth, predictable riding is key
• No half-wheeling except when passing or rotating off the front
• Ride shoulder to shoulder where traffic allows or directly on the wheel in front
Dropped from A+?
Don’t panic—within 5–10 minutes, the A group will roll up like a well-organized cavalry, ready to scoop you up when possible. Dust yourself off, tuck in, and enjoy the ride.
An old favorite gets a restart! End your week on a positive note! Join us for a fun, scenic and social ride. Expect rollers and a few hills. Rain cancels. RWGPS route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/50067515 25.6 miles with an elevation gain of 1,254‘.
