PFW Board Seeks Volunteers to Promote NJ’s Safe Passing Law

The PFW Board is seeking volunteers to help promote New Jersey’s Safe Passing Law, which went into effect on March 1st of this year. There has been a distinct absence of any outreach or awareness effort on the part of State or local agencies to promote this law to the driving public. Instead, the State has relied on a grass roots effort spearheaded by the New Jersey Bike and Walk Coalition (NJBWC) and seeded the effort with a very small grant. While the NJBWC has generated substantial materials to promote awareness especially in North Jersey, the message is not reaching the intended audience nor is it visible to automobile drivers.

The PFW Board is launching an initiative to contact the many municipalities where we conduct rides to urge them to visibly promote the law. For this initiative, we need the help of our membership to promote outreach to these county and local agencies. The task includes identifying and contacting local officials such as public safety officers and police departments to ask them for their help and provide them with links to information they can use in the promotional effort.

While driver awareness of the Safe Passing Law benefits each of us, it also benefits all cyclists who ride in New Jersey.
