Captains for Every Stoker

Give the gift of cycling to a disabled rider

We all love to cycle – that’s why we’re members of the Princeton Freewheelers. There are folks that are blind, visually impaired or disabled in other ways that love to cycle too. But their disability requires them to be partnered with a captain on a tandem bicycle. There is a need in our community for more cyclists to ride with the disabled. Perhaps one of those cyclists is you! But don’t worry...you are not required to make commitments about when and how often you ride with a disabled stoker. You may want to captain the tandem once a year or twice a month on training rides. Your stokers will appreciate any riding time you share with them!

FAQ
Questions you may have…

What if I am a good cyclist, but have never captained a tandem? There is a first time for everyone. If you have good bike handling skills and sound judgment, it is likely you can become a competent tandem captain. Contact Barb Plunkett (609) 397-5245 bplunk11@comcast.net  to go on a tandem training ride before your first ride with a disabled stoker.

What if I already have a tandem partner? Great…then you already know how to captain a tandem! Your partner will surely understand if you occasionally ride with a disabled stoker.

What if I don’t own a tandem but still want to ride? It may be that the stoker owns a tandem or one can be loaned to you.

What about bike fit and pedals? Most of the time, for the occasional or short distance ride, an adjustment of the seat height is all that is required. If you find you are cycling more and longer distances with your stoker, adjustable stems may be the answer. Pedals can easily be changed for a ride. And of course, you may find tandem riding so much fun that you purchase your own tandem for a better fit.

Some of the benefits of volunteering as a captain…

You will be giving the gift of cycling to someone who otherwise couldn’t ride.

You will meet very nice, appreciative people.

You will increase your skill level as a cyclist and as a human being.

You will be biking!

Also, please check out The U.S. Blind Tandem Cycling Connection at bicyclingblind.org. It is an excellent resource that helps connect blind and visually impaired cyclists with sighted cyclists throughout the United States. The site offers tutorials for captains and stokers and disseminates information about cycling clubs and events. There is a section which allows you to enter your information as either a captain or a stoker and shows locations of riders on a nationwide map. It will answer many of the questions and concerns you may have about cycling with a visually impaired stoker.
